Does a spouse in TD status receive work permission through the principal’s salary or benefits for a Charlottetown applicant?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

No. TD does not authorize employment, including remote work while physically in the United States.

Compare family needs separately

An attractive compensation package does not change dependent work permission. Review the spouse’s intended activity before the household relies on the offer.

Hypothetical example: a soil scientist whose spouse plans to sell digital illustrations while the household is temporarily in the United States. Separate the principal’s engagement from every other person’s planned activity. TD status does not authorize employment, including paid remote activity performed while physically in the country. Record relationship evidence, each intended arrival date, school plan, and the source of any household income. A candid first review may show that a delayed arrival, an independent work-authorized category, or a pause in the second activity is necessary. Booking accommodation or sharing a bank account does not answer the permission question.

TN remains tied to a real, prearranged professional engagement. The applicant needs Canadian or Mexican citizenship, a listed occupation, and the particular education, licence, or other qualification the entry requires. A Canadian national can request classification at an inspection location; where appropriate, the employer can instead use Form I-129 through USCIS. The category does not permit the applicant to operate their own U.S. business as self-employment.

Use records created closest to the event: signed agreements, payroll or bank evidence, corporate records, licences, civil documents, and dated correspondence. A careful review identifies what each record proves and what it does not prove. Do not solve a factual gap by copying a favourable label from another route. Make the next decision only after the missing fact is either documented, changed, or plainly described as unresolved.
