THE SHORT ANSWER

Every household plan should identify each person's relationship to the principal, citizenship, age, intended activity, travel sequence, and documents. Dependent categories can permit accompanying or following the principal, but they do not all carry identical work rules. Hypothetical example: a principal holds an L classification, a spouse expects local employment, one child plans school, and another hopes to run a small online business. A qualifying L spouse can be permitted to work through valid status with appropriate evidence; children may study but should not assume work permission from dependent status. Under a different principal category, the spouse's position may change. These distinctions belong in the plan before funds are committed, not after a lease, school term, or job offer makes the preferred outcome feel urgent. Give particular care to status records after travel. An approval notice, a visa foil, a passport stamp, and an electronic admission record can serve different purposes and may show different dates. Each family member should retain their own records and confirm that the class of admission matches the intended plan. Hypothetical example: a spouse arrives later than the principal and a child attends school in the meantime. Their documents and permissions should be checked separately rather than copied from the principal's earlier entry. If a marriage, birth, name, age, school plan, or employment proposal changes, obtain individualized advice before acting. Accurate family planning is deliberately less dramatic than a promise, but it protects against accidental unauthorized activity. Keep the factual record current as negotiations, official instructions, or family circumstances change; an earlier assumption should be corrected carefully before it becomes a submission. Hypothetical example: an L-1B principal relocates for a technical assignment while the spouse plans paid acoustic-instrument repair work and a teen hopes to assist on weekends. The concrete decision is to verify each person's status and permitted activity separately before accepting work or operating a business. Relationship evidence supports dependent classification, but it does not answer every activity question.

01

Make a person-by-person matrix

For each person, list identity documents, relationship proof, citizenship, intended work or study, prior U.S. history, and critical dates. This prevents one adult's employment offer from being treated as an answer for every other household member. Give each person a separate row for documents, intended activity, and travel dates. Recheck the row whenever an employment or school plan changes.

02

Separate work from study

Study can be permitted in circumstances where work is not. A child's school plan and a spouse's employment plan should be evaluated on their own terms. Remote activity can still raise work questions when performed while physically in the country. Identify where the activity will occur, who receives the benefit, and whether compensation is involved. Those facts matter even when work is remote or intermittent.

03

Protect age-sensitive planning

Where immigrant processing is involved, a child's age analysis can depend on visa availability and precise filing or approval dates. Preserve records early and seek tailored legal advice rather than relying on a general claim that a filing freezes age. For an age-sensitive immigrant case, preserve notices and availability dates in addition to birth records. The relevant calculation is individualized.

04

Use actual documents at each stage

Passports, admission records, approval notices, marriage certificates, and birth records should be current and consistent. An old itinerary or a family budget is not evidence of present status or permission. Compare the class and expiration on each admission record with the actual plan. Correct a discrepancy before relying on the document for work or study.
