Read the general professional work overview

THE SHORT ANSWER

A TN file is most useful when it answers the professional question in an orderly sequence. Begin with Canadian citizenship, then identify the exact USMCA profession, the employer, detailed duties, and the qualification attached to that profession. Add degrees, transcripts, licences, and a credential evaluation where the education requires one. The employer's letter should be specific enough that a reader can see why the offered work is professional work in the listed category. Avoid a collage of impressive documents that never identifies the proposed job. Hypothetical example: a civil engineer has a degree, an offer, and a separate interest in a construction venture. The file should explain the engineering role and employer; the venture should be disclosed where relevant but not used to blur the employment relationship. Before a Canadian seeks classification, read the official entry and compare every sentence in the employer letter against it. A reviewer should be able to find the employer, professional occupation, intended duties, anticipated temporary period, citizenship proof, and qualifying credentials without guessing. Keep originals or reliable copies ready, including evaluation material where education was completed outside the jurisdictions named in the agreement. If the employment involves an agency, client site, or affiliate, explain who supervises the professional and what services will be performed. Do not add a side business to the narrative unless its ownership and relevance are plainly disclosed. The aim is an accurate account of prearranged professional employment, with no suggestion that the category grants general permission to become self-employed. Keep the factual record current as negotiations, official instructions, or family circumstances change; an earlier assumption should be corrected carefully before it becomes a submission. Hypothetical example: a landscape architect accepts a municipal park-design assignment from an established firm. The decision is whether the employer letter identifies professional design duties and supervision, rather than presenting a future plan to market independent projects. That comparison should be made before selecting documents, because the record must prove a qualifying employment arrangement and not an owner-operated business plan.

01

Build the role record

Obtain a current letter from the employer describing duties, compensation, duration, work setting, supervision, and why the position needs the listed professional qualification. Add contracts or organizational material when the job is delivered to a client. The description should reflect the job the person will actually do after admission. Ask the signatory to confirm who supervises the work and how each duty fits the stated professional role.

02

Match credentials to the entry

Read the relevant USMCA entry word by word. Gather the specified degree, licence, diploma, certificate, or experience evidence as applicable. Where education was obtained elsewhere, obtain a reliable equivalency opinion if it is necessary. Professional licensing may be a separate state issue. Place the qualification rule beside the supporting record so a reviewer can see which document settles each requirement.

03

Disclose structure and sequence

If the applicant owns part of a business, invoices through an intermediary, or has a related purchase plan, include a clear explanation. TN does not permit self-employment, so the employment facts need candid analysis. Plan the request or employer filing method only after the evidence is coherent. If ownership or an intermediary is involved, identify it early and decide whether the facts are compatible with employed professional service.
