Cornwall: can an E-2 spouse work elsewhere and can a university-age child help at the business?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Assess every accompanying person's relationship, age, intended activity, and sequence separately.

E2 planning question: family

A qualifying E spouse may be permitted to work through valid status with suitable evidence, but children are not generally authorized to work merely as E dependents. Household business plans should assign functions accordingly. Hypothetical example: the investor proposes to manage sales, the spouse expects to work for a separate employer, and a university-age child may help on weekends.

Each activity has a distinct immigration question; family affection or unpaid status does not eliminate it. Record relationship certificates, citizenship, age, anticipated travel sequence, and actual role descriptions. Children can pursue education while maintaining applicable status, yet school attendance should not be described as permission to undertake payroll duties.

The enterprise plan should remain truthful even if a hoped-for family role is unavailable. Discuss practical life plans without turning them into assumed immigration permissions. Housing, childcare, medical coverage, school registration, travel reservations, and remote work arrangements may all depend on the exact status eventually obtained.

Build alternatives for a delayed arrival, a split household, or a family member whose intended activity cannot proceed as first imagined. Keep relationship documents available in long form where possible and resolve name changes early. A family member should not conceal an activity simply because it is unpaid, occasional, or performed online.

The honest description of an activity is the starting point for sound advice. When a family fact changes, update the whole plan rather than adding an informal side note to an outdated principal application.
